CHAPTER 11

Cold Shoulder

LOREN

My head rests on Barret’s shoulder, the woozy feeling of alcohol taking over my small stature. I’m not much of a drinker, and my endurance is showing, but I had to do this for Maria and Gio. It’s not my favorite part of the job, but getting to cozy up with Barret’s warm side is an added bonus.

He’s far less affected than I am, his hand more confident on my thigh this time while the car pulls away from the upscale bar. We sent in our menu for the wedding, and I stuffed a copy into my purse, so I know what we ordered once this dizziness finally leaves my body.

“I’m hungry,” I murmur, my lips grazing Barrett’s neck, where he shudders from the feeling. I bite back a laugh and repeat myself in case the tickle on his throat distracted him from my words. “I’m hungry, Barret.”

“I know you are, baby. We can pick something up on the way to your house, okay?”

I exhale exceedingly with that reply. “You’re a chef. Why can’t you make me something?”

He laughs through his words. “Is that what you want?”

“Yes, please.”

“Alright, then I guess we’re going to make a pitstop. Hey, Marshal. Swing by Venus for me, please.”

The driver pulls down the nearest street, circling the city at night, with the yellow streetlamps setting such a sweet, sultry mood. I have to refrain from being caught in this haze of love and affection. Mostly because I can’t fall for Barret again.

Too much would come with that relationship, and I can’t do that to either of us.

Instead, I play it safe, leaning off his shoulder while the car comes to a halt outside the iron and glass restaurant. It’s so beautiful at night; the light fixtures inside dimmed enough to see the space, but not so bright that it overpowers the delicacy of the night.

He undoes the alarm and lets me inside, the silence of this typically packed restaurant almost eerie in a sense. I kick my purse under the hostess stand and find a seat in the middle of the restaurant. I can see clearly when I sit down, but walking is still a bit difficult after drinking so much champagne.

Barret makes his way to the kitchen, but stops, returning to my side, where his palm caresses my curls back behind my ear. His smile grows, the ease of his joy so overwhelming that there’s nothing else to do but kiss his lips. I meet him halfway, our slow and steady greeting like compacted fireworks without any loud noises, and not too many flashing lights.

It’s so easy to kiss Barret Jacks, and I’m so calm while falling for him again.

I pull away when I know I’m going too far, and he doesn’t say anything but grin. I swoon over the exit of his body while he ducks into the kitchen and fires up the grill. Meanwhile, I’m fighting every natural urge I have to not follow him inside and kiss him endlessly.
